Year Two Blues

Everyone says things are better the second year.

When things suck the first year, the pat response is, “It will get better. Year Two will be amazing.”

But what if it’s not? What if Year Two makes Year One look like a vacation at Disney World?

Anyone else out there experienced things getting WORSE instead of BETTER? And not just worse, but way, way, way, way, WAY worse?

I don’t think my second year was worse, necessarily, but I felt worse about my teaching abilities a lot of the time. I knew enough to know I wasn’t doing a good enough job, and I asked myself exactly what you’re asking here.

    Hope that’s helpful.

My experience as a teacher was that I didn’t really know how to teach until I’d been teaching for five or so years. Like any other craft, it improves with experience and time. Would you expect to know how to play an instrument by your second year? Be fluent in a language? Write the great American novel? Regardless of what they tell you… teaching is a complex craft that takes many years of serious commitment. If you want to do this work.. hang in there. It will get better, but it will never get easy.
